Hannover

Hannover is the home of Continental Tire, the fourth largest tire company in the world today. Both Continental’s World Headquarters and Research Center are located in Hannover.

Continental Tires has over 19 tire plants around the world.  In Germany, Continental has two tire plants in Aachen and Korbach.  Also, to the east, Continental Tire has two very large plants in Puchov, Slovakia and Otrokovice, Czech Republic.

While Continental AG is presently the 4th largest tire company in the world, it is actually the largest non-tire rubber products producer in the world today because it produces not only tires, but also rubber belts, hose, molded goods, extruded rubber products, and other cured rubber products.

Also, Hannover is the home of DIK (German Institute of Rubber Technology), which is an institute engaged in research in the areas of rubber chemistry and physics as well as rubber processing technology.

The KHK Colloquium on rubber technology is also commonly held in Hannover, typically in November.  Scientists and Engineers from many nations participate in this conference.  In addition, the Tire Technology Expo (the largest in Europe), now meets in the Winter in Hannover.  This is one of the largest tire exposition and conferences held in Europe.

The University of Hanover is one of the two best universities in Europe for rubber science and engineering today.  The official name for this university is Gottfried Wilheim Leibniz Universitat Hannover; however, the shortened name of Leibniz University Hannover is more common. It has a student body of about 26,000 with a faculty of a little over 3,000.

Hannover is the capital of Lower Saxony. With its red-brick Gothic market church and old town hall area,  it becomes attractive to visitors and is known for its “trade fairs”. This city has a population of about 535,000 people, which makes it the 13th largest city in Germany and the 3rd largest in northern Germany.   Hannover is also known historically as the family seat of the “Hanoverian Kings” of the UK.
